The audience was basically a crowd of indie boy bobblehead dolls with beards, glasses and flannel shirts. You would, Williamsburg. You WOULD.
Otherwise it was pretty cool, they played most of my faves.

You win a punk point, you lose a punk point.
But actually what if we did start a radical queer public access show? With a bunch of queer people of color and internet girl gangs and punks? Maybe that would give us an incentive to actually take a day to film our queer version of The Room, or write songs about S.C.U.M. I know I’ve been chock full of silly projects lately but I think some folks on tumblr have a lot of potential.

I suppose this is a joke? Is this how she deals with commentary about the lack of diversity in the show? I am baffled, someone throw me a rope!
It is taking everything in me not to tweet back at her asking if a. she’s ever been to Harlem, (a2. bonus points if she’s ever gone without clutching her handbag), b. if she’s ever been south of the Williamsburg Bridge and c. how the fuck she gets paid to write about Brooklyn without people of color. Oh yeah, and maybe a couple other pointed insults about her intelligence.

Lauren Measure and the members of Girlcrush playing in the Discount cover band last night at Death By Audio!
I would usually never post a video of myself playing music but the Anti-Valentines cover show that happens every year is always a major highlight for me and there’s never been any video of my participation in the past. This song is called Math Won’t Miss You. Thanks to Jackie O, Al and Jayne for making a Discount cover band happen.
Thanks to Devin for taking this video and one other that’s up on YouTube.
You sounded so great! I’m glad these are online.

I look so smug, with a glass of cider and my belly full of vegan food. In the meantime, take note of how ~sultry~ Marta looks!
In 1959, a decade prior to Manhattan’s Stonewall riots, across the bridge in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, the Starlite Lounge was founded as a non-discriminating establishment for gay people of color. A half century later it was a shock to the neighborhood and the gay community when the Starlite, now the oldest, Black-owned gay bar in the country was given notice to vacate and was ultimately forced to close its doors. STARLITE follows the eviction of this legendary community institution, while also tracing back its rich history over 5 decades. STARLITE poses questions about the importance of safe space in marginalized communities and asks, what is a landmark? Why do some get preserved, while others are erased?
The Starlite Project is a feature-length documentary film titled Starlite and an interactive website based on the making and the taking of the historic Starlite Lounge- the oldest black-owned gay bar in Brooklyn. The goals of the Project are to preserve the historic memory of the Starlite and to counteract the forces which contributed to its closing.
K and I celebrated our anniversary tonight, by kicking it at the benefit party/screening to bring the Starlite back to Crown Heights. If you watch the trailer, you’ll see how gentrification (not gonna lie, I’m a part of it) has contributed to the demise of many locally-owned businesses and community centers, including the Starlite. But there was a good turnout at the benefit tonight, and we had lots of fun singing some disco karaoke and dancing with friends, both new and old. I’m incredibly excited to see the revival of such an important landmark in Brooklyn, and especially a space for QPOC. (And besides, Sweet Revenge is just too damn small for anyone to dance properly at those queer Latin@ parties.) I highly suggest you check out the documentary if/when it comes to your town, or drop a couple bucks on the Kickstarter so that the Starlite can rise again.

Oh, okay. (via synecdoche) SLUTWALK IS TOMORROW, Y’ALL (via funkyfest) Oh look, NYPD still not knowing what the fuck they’re doing! This ain’t the New York Fashion Police Department. If their idea of safety is telling us what to wear, profiling people of color and beating up protesters, then I sure as hell don’t trust them with “protecting” anyone in this city. |
