HAPPY HUMP DAY, ASSHOLES

First Queer Anti-Authoritarian Open Assembly

kvltkunt:

weds. 7pm brooklyn free school at 372 clinton

This is the first open assembly calling all anti-authoritarian and anti-capitalist queers. While anti-authoritarian and anarchist spaces can feel entirely white, straight, and cis, they aren’t: many queer people exist in these circles. We are sick of being silenced and tokenized.

So let’s make a space of our own, get to know each other, and build affinity. The agenda will be fairly open, but this meeting does not exist to weigh the merits of a diversity of tactics.

PLEASE NOTE: This event is for self-identified trans, queer, lesbian, gay, bi, intersex, and any other non-conforming gender/sexual orientation. Straight allies are not welcome.

Possible topics of discussion:
- Challenging heteropatriarchy within the Ⓐ milieu
- Fighting gay assimilationism
- Racism in queer spaces / POC caucus
- What is “queer” and in what ways can it be inclusive/exclusive?
- Pride Festival NYC

THIS IS A SAFE SPACE: Absolutely no sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, classism, or cissexism will be tolerated. Many of us have experienced violent and oppressive behavior of this nature. If you have been held accountable through a process or other wishes of the survivor, please attend. lf you have not, you will be physically removed. We respect survivor autonomy above all- this is not up for dispute. If you are being oppressive or making someone feel unsafe, you will be asked to leave or we will remove you.

Please email us if you have questions about attending, or about any of these terms, or the safer space policy, we want to talk to you! hexxbrooklyn{at}gmail{dot}com

Christina Gonzalez, an activist protesting the NYPD’s stop-and-frisk tactics, was held in contempt of court on Friday, and sentenced to ten days in jail, after she called Judge John H. Wilson a “white racist pig.” In 2006 Judge Wilson penned a children’s book called Hot House Flowers, which was an allegory for illegal immigration that depicted immigrants as dandelions that should be “weeded out.” A man videotaping the exchange was also handcuffed, and had the contents of his camera deleted by court employees.

Get it grrrl. A.J.A.B.

Tonight a bunch of folks put on a noise demo in front of an NYC women’s correctional facility for Mother’s Day. In solidarity with all those incarcerated, abused, and especially those who won’t get to see their kids this Mother’s Day, we clapped and chanted “WE’LL DESTROY ALL THE PRISONS ONE DAY! HAPPY, HAPPY, HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!” The women were flicking the lights on and off, waving lighters and dancing in the windows. At some point you could tell they were having a dance party inside, because they were making their own rhythms and chanting each others’ names. (“You go girl” was my favorite chant by far.) Fuck prisons, fuck patriarchy.

omg who wants to audition with me?

i'm from atlanta but am going to visit my best friend in nyc this summer (june). any suggestions about great grrrl locations or riot grrrl events?

Wellll a good place to start is the Bluestockings event calendar. It’s a radical bookstore in downtown Manhattan that hosts a lot of happenings, but if you visit the store you’ll see a wide range of flyers for outside events. Also, there’s a Riot Grrrl archive at NYU, and if you travel uptown to Barnard you’ll find the official Zine Library. And you should check out Permanent Wave, an artsy feminist group that puts on lots of fabulous shows and sells delectable baked goods. Have a great time!

I suppose this is a joke? Is this how she deals with commentary about the lack of diversity in the show? I am baffled, someone throw me a rope!

It is taking everything in me not to tweet back at her asking if a. she’s ever been to Harlem, (a2. bonus points if she’s ever gone without clutching her handbag), b. if she’s ever been south of the Williamsburg Bridge and c. how the fuck she gets paid to write about Brooklyn without people of color. Oh yeah, and maybe a couple other pointed insults about her intelligence.

Did you see the Gossling/manarchist meme referenced by @PennyRed on twitter? thought you'd be interested

Hahaha, yes I did. I definitely LOL’d when she referenced it after Ryan Gosling saved her from oncoming traffic. No big deal though, the internet— and New York City— are both very small places.

I really love how the couple I dog-sit for (they’re set designers in SoHo) intentionally left all the riot grrrl records out for me before they went away. Pictured: Bikini Kill, Free Kitten, Bratmobile, The Frumpies.

Unfortunately I had to work while this was happening. But I ran into some middle schoolers on the train who were coming back from the event. They handed me a flyer and we talked for a little bit. I sometimes forget how rad and mature most NYC kids are. In middle school, everyone I knew, including myself, seemed more concerned about TV or wearing the “right” clothes than about institutional racism. (Or perhaps we just weren’t as confident enough to talk about such serious things?) Anyway, we had a good discussion about shitty cops. Those kids, if not organizing already, will make great organizers one day.

I had to stop myself from squawking [my version of drunkenly laughing] out loud next to P-Strut at a friend’s reading tonight. Luckily, she livetweeted the event in THOROUGH detail.
